The Kutumb Foundation has been conducting drama-in-education classes in underserved village schools in Noida since 2018, supported by HCL Foundation. Our sessions explore the family and community’s relationship to the environment through dramatic conventions and theatre and work with youth from Class III-XIII. Students also create plays on these themes, and videos are created highlighting their work. When the Pandemic came, we created a series of Sacchai ki Jeet videos where facilitators served as ‘anchors’ and students served as ‘reporters’ highlighting relevant issues in their communities. Drama-in-education serves as a profoundly effective tool to challenge power-dynamics, in particular those of patriarchy and inequitable gender relations, and is premised on problem posing rather than rote learning.
